The Maple Device app turns an Android tablet or kiosk into a self-order kiosk. Guests order by touch or by voice, and orders go to your store like any other Maple order.

What you need

  • A device: an Android tablet or kiosk unit running Android 8 or newer.
  • Wi-Fi: a working internet connection at the spot where the kiosk stands.
  • Maple dashboard access for the store.
  • A printer (optional): a built-in receipt printer, or an ESC/POS receipt printer on the same network. It takes 58 mm or 80 mm paper.

Turn on the kiosk in Maple

1

Open Manage Kiosk

In the Maple dashboard, go to Orders and click Manage Kiosk.
2

Enable the kiosk

Click Enable Kiosk. You only do this once per store.
3

Get a pairing code

Click Pair a kiosk. Maple shows a 6-digit code. Keep the dashboard open; you will type this code on the device.
If you don’t see Manage Kiosk on the Orders page, contact Maple. Kiosk may not be on for your store yet.
Each code works once and expires after 10 minutes. If it expires, click Pair a kiosk again.

Install the Maple Device app

1

Download the app

On the device, open device-apks.maple.inc/latest.apk in the browser.
2

Open the file

Open the file once it finishes downloading.
3

Allow the install

When Android asks, allow installs from this source. Android shows this once, because the app does not come from the Play Store.
4

Install and open

Tap Install, then Open.
5

Allow permissions

Allow Bluetooth, notifications and the microphone. Guests need the microphone to order by voice.

Pair the device

1

Enter the code

On the Pair this device screen, type the 6-digit code from the dashboard and tap Pair.
2

Choose Kiosk mode

The device opens its settings. In the Mode card, choose Kiosk. Leave Kiosk address as it is, then tap Save mode.
3

Finish setup

The kiosk opens and shows a setup screen with a few checks. Tap Finish setup and open kiosk. You only see this screen the first time.
Back in the dashboard, the device now shows in the Devices list under Manage Kiosk, marked Online.

Check the sound

Guests talk to the kiosk, so check that it can hear and be heard.
1

Open settings

Hold the top-left corner of the screen for 5 seconds, then tap Open settings.
2

Check the microphone

In the Sound card, Microphone should say Allowed. If not, tap Allow microphone (or Open app settings if Android blocked it) and turn it on.
3

Play a test sound

Tap Test sound. You should hear three tones from the speaker. If you don’t, turn up the call volume and try again.
4

Go back

Tap Return to kiosk.

Set up a printer (optional)

1

Open settings

Hold the top-left corner for 5 seconds, then tap Open settings.
2

Choose the printer

In Printer settings, choose Built-in printer if the device has one, or Network printer. For a network printer, enter its IP address under Address and leave Port at 9100. The printer’s self-test slip shows its address.
3

Choose the paper width

Pick 58 mm or 80 mm to match the paper roll.
4

Save and test

Tap Save settings, then Test print.
5

Go back

Tap Return to kiosk.
What the test result means:

Get back to settings

The kiosk fills the screen, and the Android back button does nothing. To reach settings:
  1. Hold the top-left corner of the screen for 5 seconds.
  2. Tap Open settings.
  3. When you’re done, tap Return to kiosk.
To turn the kiosk back into a ticket printer only, choose Printer in the Mode card and tap Save mode.

Updates

Small app updates download on their own. The kiosk installs them overnight, between 2 and 5 a.m., so guests are not interrupted. Now and then a new version of the app itself comes out. When it does, the settings screen shows A new version of Maple Device is ready. Tap Download, open the file, then tap Install. Pairing and settings stay as they are. The notice only shows in settings, never on the kiosk screen guests see, so open settings now and then to check.

Manage the kiosk from the dashboard

Under Orders > Manage Kiosk, the Devices list shows each paired device with:
  • Online or Offline, and when Maple last heard from it
  • Its mode (Kiosk or Printer), app version and printer status
  • The last ticket it printed
Click Unpair to remove a device. It stops working until you pair it again with a new code. The same page also sets the kiosk’s colors, idle screen image, welcome message, voice and languages.

Troubleshooting

Open settings and tap Test sound in the Sound card. If you don’t hear three tones, turn up the call volume with the device’s volume buttons. If Microphone doesn’t say Allowed, tap Allow microphone or Open app settings and turn the microphone on.
Codes work once and expire after 10 minutes. In the dashboard, click Pair a kiosk to get a new code, and enter it right away. Check that you typed all 6 digits.
Check that the device is on Wi-Fi and the network has internet access. Open settings: in the Status card, Connection should say Connected. The app keeps trying while it’s offline, so it reconnects on its own once the network is back. If it stays offline, restart the device.
Open settings and tap Test print. Check that the printer is on, has paper and is on the same network as the device. For a network printer, check the IP address against the printer’s self-test slip, and check the port is 9100. The Status card shows Out of paper or Error when the printer reports a problem.
Check the Wi-Fi first. Then open settings and check that Kiosk address in the Mode card is filled in. Tap Return to kiosk to try again.
